The Property  – Birding Destination – TGCSA Four-star Bed and Breakfast establishment

The well-appointed and eco-friendly lodge in a tranquil, parkland setting, is the ideal place to sit back, relax and enjoy a sundowner on your private deck overlooking the garden. A tree-top breakfast amongst the birds adds to the unique experience and don’t be surprised if a few “tame” and opportunistic feathered friends join you for a titbit, preferably pecked from your hand!

A private entrance leads to five en-suite bedrooms , each with its own deck overlooking the garden and swimming pool. Rooms are well-appointed with everything you need to make your stay a memorable one. There is a covered barbeque area next to the swimming pool for those guests who prefer to relax at Pumula Lodge and perhaps have a barbeque (or as we say in the vernacular, a braai). However, if cooking is not on your list of things to do while on holiday, your hosts will recommend some of the many fine restaurants in the area.

True relaxation is the order of the day

Pumula Lodge, a four-star bed and breakfast establishment, opened its doors in December 1997.Through the years, and after many improvements to both the main house and the extensive garden, owners Pieter and Rensia Ellis have managed to keep to their original objective of creating a place where like-minded people could feel connected to nature – truly a ‘Place of Rest’ as the name Pumula suggests.

“As Pumula Lodge is first and foremost our home, we felt it important to create a home away from home where our guests can relax and share in the tranquil surroundings. We want our guests to feel well rested when they leave.”

Pumula Lodge was established in 1997. The Lodge is geared towards birders and lovers of nature, so a general awareness of the environment is an integral part of the ethos of the establishment.

Bird watching at Pumula Lodge and surrounding areas

“Pumula Lodge boasts a prolific bird life counting more than 120 species to date.” The magnificent, indigenous garden at Pumula Lodge is the perfect setting for nature lovers and bird watchers alike. Pumula boasts an abundant bird life and more than 120 species have been identified to date. For true birding enthusiasts, the Woodbourne bird sanctuary is a mere 3 km from the lodge and well worth a visit. Here the many visiting waders can be enjoyed at leisure. Or, take a close drive to the surrounding Knysna forests and enjoy a pleasant walk on one of the many trails. You might just catch a glimpse of the shy and elusive Narina Trogon.

Our Garden

“Gardening with fynbos has been particularly rewarding for us, and to see a King Protea open at the start of the season remains something we cherish.” Originally designed by the late Professor Ken Durham, Pumula boasts a low maintenance, water-wise garden using as many indigenous plants as possible. This approach contributed to Pumula’s prolific bird life counting more than 120 species to date. As in every garden, nothing is static and small changes are made continuously. Although a daunting task to identify each and every plant, we – with a little help from our friends – were able to compile an extensive plant list. However, there are still a few plants that need to be positively identified.
